Day 2 Monday 14th June

Once again, the group awoke to have an early morning breakfast at the hotel restaurant before heading over to the orphanage. Like the previous day, the group set straight to work at painting the walls. The mural painting, overseen by Mrs Caroline Tang, was also started on the second level, with the idea of an underwater theme. This time, less people scraped off paint and more started painting the outside of the second floor. We started painting the various rooms we had not accomplished the day before, and we also started on the second coat of paint on the walls. After our brief lunch of revolting MRE’s, all the while being hounded by dozens of flies, we continued our work to about 4’o clock, at which time all the boys came down to have a football match with the children. We then trouped onto the bus to return to the hotel to rest and relax. At 6.30pm, we all met at the lobby to head for our dinner. After the delicious and enjoyable buffet dinner, the group chose to venture into the night market, something that we had wanted to do the previous night but was cancelled due to the rain. In the night market, there were all sorts of interesting things to see and do, such as the doctor fish. These special breed of fish would bite of the dead skin cells on your toes, supposedly leaving your feet extremely clean and healthy. The downside was, it was very ticklish, as most of the group who tried it found out. After the group finished with the doctor fish ‘’massage’’, we split up and went our separate ways into the night market, and after having bargained and bought what we wanted, we one by one made our way back to the hotel by tuk- tuks. After another exhausting day, it was all to easy to sink into our beds to sleep.

Day 1 Sunday 13th June

The group gathered dark and early at Changi Airport Terminal 1 on Suday 13th June. While some of us went to gather the boxes from Uncle Sebastian's office, the others guarded the bags. Due to the skytrain being out of order, it took the group half an hour to gather the boxes and trolley them over to terminal 1. After a long and tedious check in where nearly 40 boxes were checked in, the group headed to the plane. Before long, the entire group had boaded the plan heading for Siem Reap. After a 2 hour flight, we landed at Siem Reap Aiport. After collecting our various boxes and luggage, we boarded our bus and were introduced to our guide. While on the way to the hotel, he told us various interesting things about Cambodia's history as well as important events that affected Cambodia. Once we checked in to the hotel, the starving group had a much-needed breakfast at the hotel poolside restaurant. After that, the group boarded the bus and headed to the Four Square Orphange, where we would spend the next four days helping to improve and brighten up the orhpange. When we got there, we briefly introduced ourselves before immediately setting to work. Some brought out huge cans of paint and set to painting the walls blue and yellow, the traditional ACS colours. Others scraped the old paint off the walls to allow the new layer to set in and dry. The group worked hard until lunch time, where we all stopped work to have a lunch of MREs (meals ready to eat). After that we continued work until the late afternoon, when all the boys went down and played soccer with the boys from the orphange. We then retuned to the hotel to wash up and rest before heading out to dinner. Our dinner was held at a seafood reatuarant and was a 7 course meal. After eating our fill, we went back to the hotel for a good night's rest

After all the scrapping and paint work, there was some time for rest and recreation. The riders' faces of anticipation and the snapping of photos by excited dads shows the reward of finished work.

Church Orphan Home
The Puok Church Orphan Home is located in the Siem Reap Province of Cambodia.

Siem Reap is home of one of Cambodia's most famous tourist attractions, Angkor Watt. Angkor Watt is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Most of the people in the Puok village try to make a living by making noodles. They sell the noodles to people in neighboring towns and villages. The majority of the villagers in the Puok village are very poor. They are very hard workers and often times do not get enough nourishment in their diets. Lack of nutrition, combined with poor living conditions are the grounds for deadly diseases.

The primary factor contributing to the growing population of orphans is AIDS. Many of the children lost one or both parents to this disease. Childbirth complications and diseases like TB are also frequent causes of children being orphaned in this district.The children in the home start each day at 5 o'clock with a morning devotional. Afterwards, they eat breakfast together. Some of the children go to school in the morning, and others attend class in the afternoon.

When they are at home during the day, they help clean the home, attend an English class, and relax. All the children are at the home at lunchtime between 11:00 and 1:30. During that time, they eat, play, and maybe take a nap. Before dinner, the older children play sports like volleyball. They finish the day with evening worship and devotions before going to sleep.

Greetings to all survivors of OCIP Cambodia 2010, my apologies for the delay but the Blog is now ready for posting. Once again, our sincere thanks to those who made the trip seamless, undoubtedly from weeks of planning to create expeditious check ins, customs clearance, transport, good food (ration excluded), logistics and even mosquitoes management. There must be less than 10 bites on my body. Jon and I have a meaningful time not only as father and son bonding, for new friendship made and having to be blessed by bring some cheer to those in the Orphanage.
